Our Products
Markel Insurance Company has provided equine insurance for over four decades, pioneering many of the policy forms and endorsements now considered standard in the industry. As a leading developer of specialty risk management tools and services, we have continually enhanced and improved our products to meet the changing needs of our customers. The following is an overview of our coverage offerings.
- All Risk Horse Mortality & Theft Coverage
Also called "Full Mortality"; this coverage reimburses you for death, theft, or humane destruction of a covered horse. Equine mortality policies are often made up of several "pieces" and not all companies' policies are comparable. It's not just the cost; it's the coverages and the differences that can be significant! - Specified Perils Coverage
Also called "Named Perils" or "Restricted Perils"; this covers your horse for death, theft or humane destruction caused by specified perils listed in the policy, including but not limited to fire and lightning, earthquakes, electrocution, drowning, transit risks and attack by wild animals. It is important to note that this policy does not cover your horse for death due to illness or disease, and is thus offered at a lower price than full or all risk mortality insurance. - Private Horse Owner's Liability
Your horse may be one of your most important possessions, but it can also be your biggest liability. Individual horse owners place themselves and their assets at risk every time their horse comes in contact with people. Equine-related lawsuits occur more frequently than you may think. And many homeowners' policies limit this type of equine liability coverage or exclude it altogether. This coverage is for private horse owners who own up to 10 horses and are not involved in a commercial operation. Click here to read more about Markel's Private Horse Owner's Liability.
- Commercial Equine Liability
Equine liability insurance is indispensable for anyone with a horse-related business. In today's litigious society, protection against liability claims is an utmost necessity. Even with waivers and state laws designed to limit or control liabilities, commercial equine operations are vulnerable. And win or lose, a lawsuit will be an unwanted cost to your business. - Farm Package
Do you own a horse farm and need to protect your home and buildings, as well as cover your equine mortality? The Markel Horse Farm (Equi-Farm) policy provides property insurance to cover your home, household contents, barns, sheds, owned machinery, equipment, tack, and livestock. It also provides liability coverage for your on and off- premises horse operations, such as boarding, breeding, racing, training, horse shows, and riding instruction. - Prospective Foal Coverage
This endorsement covers failure of the prospective foal to be born alive, or death of the prospective foal after its birth but prior to the expiration date of coverage. Click here to read more about this and other Mare & Stallion coverages.
- Stallion Infertility Due to Accident, Sickness, or Disease
This endorsement provides coverage should your stallion become totally and permanently impotent, infertile or incapable of serving mares due to an illness or injury. Click here to read more about this and other Mare & Stallion coverages.
- Transit & Coverage Outside of the USA / Canada
We at Markel understand that in this industry, horses are often shuttled around the world to race, breed, or go to auction. As such, we offer coverage for air transit to and/or from the USA and may extend Mortality coverage to include new territorial limits. An additional premium will be payable for this coverage.
NOTE: Actual coverages are subject to various terms, conditions and exclusions.
